I just discovered this website and I have been fascinated reading this guest book. Unfortunately I did not not find one name that I recognized. I studied Russian at Syracuse University and was present when the Hilltop fire occurred in January 1959. From there I was in the 6916th at Rhein Main, Germany. I had many TDY’s to Incirlik AB in Turkey. In 1962 I was transferred directly to Misawa, Japan and joined the 6988th. When the unit was moved to Yokota AB in 1963, I went with them. I flew as “Bat 2” until my discharge in 1965. Had TDY’s to Alaska, Thailand, and Vietnam.

I was in Squadron 3724 Flight 387 BMTS at Lackland. I then attended DLIWC, Monterey, CA as a student of Czech from July 1970 to June 1971. I was at Goodfellow AFB, 6940th Security Wing, from July 1971 - Seot 1971 and completed the ALK 20331- E course. I was then stationed in Darmstadt West Germany with the 6910th Security Group as a Czech linguist from Oct 1971-Apr 1972. My last assignment was in Rimbach, West Germany with the 6910th which was combined with the USASA Augsburg FS Det N (previously Darmstadt FSDet K).

We were all young and played hard, worked hard, and made a lot of life long friends.

I was a Radio Operator on RB-29 and the Radio Operator/Right Gunner on RB50G aircraft, 6091, Yokota from Jan 1956 to Dec,1958. The only names I can remember are Captain Murphy, Pilot and "Big Al" the CFC. My radio call sign was Engage 22. On page 61 of The Price of Vigilance Mr. Tart recalls the loss of a RB-50 from my squadron on September 10, 1956. If any reader knows the name of the radio operator on that aircraft I would appreciate an email. I would like to include his name in a bio I'm putting together for my son.

Six months of Russian at ALS in Monterey (graduated 1956). A few months in Sembach, 6914th RSM. Them to Berlin with Det. 1 of the 6914th RSM, later became the 6910th RGM, departed in 1959. Wouldn't trade that time for anything.

USAFSS 292x2 71-75

Kessler then Goodfellow
6981st 72
6920th 72-74
NSA 74-75
Being 17 when I started did not realize what a contribution USAFSS had on keeping us all free, now I look back with pride on what was accomplished. Would like to hear from anyone from Meade or Trick 1 Misawa.
Chased signal for 38 years when I got out working in Cable, Phone then Internet. AF training and experience
was top notch. Thanks for the research and your service Larry.

VN 203 with 6990th until April 1970. Used GI money for college then received my gold bars but never returned to USAFSS. I regard flying these recon missions to be the most meaningful memories of my life.
